New way for ripping DVDs

For many years, illegal DVD ripping software was used by movie buffs to copy DVDs to the computer Hard Disk Drives. Now a software solution has been provided by Real Networks that makes the task of ripping DVDs not only easy but legal as well.

This new DVD ripping software by the Seattle based company was revealed this Monday. The software has been named as RealDVD. The company claims that the new program does not abide the copyright laws and it does not tamper with the copy right protection technology. It would even prevent the illegal distribution of movies on line. The software costing at $30 would enable the user to save a copy of movie to their computer. To transfer it to other computers the customers will have to purchase additional copy of the software by the company.

Spending $30 to back up DVD collection on a PC can be useful so that flicks can be watched on the laptop without the hassle of lugging around discs which is quite convenient for business travelers.

But while Real’s technology can copy the contents of a DVD without breaking its built-in copy-protection, the company has no way of verifying that the DVDs you copy to your PC are yours. They could also be movies you rented from a movie rental or borrowed from a friend.

It could be problematic for Hollywood studios, which have fought hard for years to protect movie DVDs from piracy. Ripping a DVD has been a lot more complicated than copying a CD, which shows that they have been somewhat successful.
